Reporting - Corporate Responsibility

Reporting

ANZ has been reporting on its corporate responsibility (CR) performance for the past five years. Over this time, we have developed and refined our approach to reporting. This year our CR reporting comprises two elements - a printed ''CR Review' (PDF 796kB)' and our CR website.

We also update our stakeholders on the management and progress of our CR priorities through interim CR reporting, interim and annual financial reporting and our monthly CR Update.

2009 CR Interim report

ANZ’s 2009 CR Interim report provides an update on our response to recent issues and challenges and how we are progressing against our 2009 CR goals.

Group CR Review

The Group's CR Review (PDF 796kB) is an in-depth analysis of ANZ's response to material issues for the year to 30 September 2008. The Review includes statements from our Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, as well as a summary of our performance against our 2008 CR goals as published in our 2007 Corporate Responsibility Report. The Review covers our global operations including Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific, unless otherwise stated.

A report on the CR Performance of ANZ National in New Zealand, incorporating the brands ANZ, The National Bank, UDC Finance, EFTPOS New Zealand, Bonus Bonds and Direct Broking is now available.

Corporate responsibility website

ANZ's CR website provides a detailed overview of our responsible business practices. Our aim is to provide users with the most up-to-date information and regular reporting of CR progress at ANZ. We believe online reporting is the best way to address the growing amount of information required by key stakeholders and reporting frameworks. At the same time it reduces our impact on the environment by minimising print requirements.

Our performance in 2008 is covered in the 'Performance and Reporting' section of our website. We also report quantitative information about our key program areas in various sections of the website under the heading 'Progress in 2008'. This information is related to the year ended 30 September 2008 and covers our global operations unless otherwise stated. It is also subject to independent assurance from Corporate Citizenship.

Monthly Corporate Responsibility Updates

ANZ's stakeholders can keep up-to-date with our CR news and progress by subscribing to monthly CR updates. Approximately 7,000 people receive the email updates which contains information about how ANZ is progressing against our CR goals and commitments, as well as other key initiatives and issues at ANZ.

Interim and annual financial reports

Progress on our CR agenda is reported to shareholders through our interim and financial reports. Presentations at our interim results announcements and Annual General Meetings also cover key CR topics.

Assurance

ANZ has used the AA1000 Assurance Standard (AA1000AS) principles to report on our progress in addressing the needs and interests of our stakeholders. Corporate Citizenship has provided an external assurance statement in keeping with the International Standard on Assurance Engagements ISAE 3000 and AA1000 Assurance Standard.

SGS Australia was commissioned to conduct an independent assurance of the Environmental data on the ANZ website. Assurance was provided using the following protocols from the GRI guidelines, AA1000 Assurance Standard and ISAE3000. This included a combination of interviews with relevant employees in Australia and New Zealand, an evaluation of the data collection processes and the data itself. Validation with external bodies was undertaken where relevant.

Global Reporting Initiative

ANZ is an organisational member of the Global Reporting Initiative and has been using its Sustainability Reporting Guidelines since 2006. The Guidelines provide a generally accepted framework for reporting on an organisation's economic, environmental and social performance. ANZ has used the GRI Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (G3) in our 2008 reporting on our CR website and in our CR Review (PDF 796kB).

London Benchmarking Group

ANZ began using the London Benchmarking Group (LBG) framework for measuring and reporting our community contributions and achievements in 2005. The LBG model encourages greater accountability and is recognised as best practice in reporting on corporate community investment.

Reporting scope and boundaries

ANZ's CR reporting (CR website and CR Review) is intended to cover our operations globally. However quantitative measures presented in our reporting specifically reference the countries covered by the data. This is due to varying systems across different countries. We are improving our systems and reporting where this situation arises.

Please note that joint venture partnerships are not covered in ANZ's CR reporting unless otherwise stated.

The only key significant change since the last reporting period was the announcement of a new business model and organisational structure in September 2008. Read the media release (PDF 44kB).

Data measurement is managed centrally by ANZ's Group Corporate Affairs function. Techniques for measuring the progress against ANZ's CR goals are formally documented each year and reviewed by our assurance providers. Definitions of the terms used in our 2008 reporting including data measurement techniques, are provided in Corporate Responsibility Definitions (PDF 68kB).
