When you're travelling, it’s a good idea to carry some cash in the currency of the country you're visiting to cover any incidental expenses such as taxis, meals and tipping. (Remember, if you lose your foreign cash, it is gone and cannot be replaced. Never carry too much on you at any one time.)

Conversion

When you return home, any accepted notes can be converted back to Australian Dollars at any ANZ branch or ANZ Foreign Exchange Centre location¹.

Please ensure you bring suitable photo identification, such as your passport, when exchanging your money.

Please note: Non-ANZ account holders are only able to convert their foreign cash back into Australian dollars through ANZ branches where the value of the transaction is less than the equivalent of AUD 1,000. Conversions for this amount and over must be made via an ANZ Foreign Exchange Centre.

How to buy foreign currency cash

ANZ offers foreign currency cash through a variety of channels.

ANZ Foreign Exchange Centre
Foreign currency cash can be purchased by both ANZ and non-ANZ account holders.
ANZ branches
Foreign currency cash of the equivalent of under AUD1,000 can be purchased by both ANZ and non-ANZ account holders. The ability to purchase foreign currency cash on the spot will depend on the cash holdings of the ANZ branch at the time. Where it is not available on the spot, foreign currency cash orders can be collected within 2-3 business days.

Foreign currency cash of the equivalent of AUD 1,000 and over is only able to be ordered via an ANZ branch using an ANZ transaction account or an ANZ credit card account.

ANZ Internet Banking and ANZ Phone Banking
Foreign currency cash can be ordered using an ANZ transaction account or ANZ credit card account online via the International Services tab in ANZ Internet Banking or via ANZ Phone Banking by calling 1800 352 535 (free call) in Australia, 8.00am to 8.00pm AEST, Monday to Friday. Foreign currency cash ordered via these channels can be collected within 2-3 business days. Remember to bring your current driver’s licence or passport for identification.

What fees are involved?

Foreign currency cash is charged at 1% of the AUD equivalent value for each currency purchased, with a minimum charge of AUD$8 per currency.
