Finding the solution

The choice isn’t just about money, although your budget plays its part. There are motor homes that cost more than the average Australian home and there are camper trailers you can snare for a couple of thousand dollars.

The options include:

Camper trailers – light to tow, they generally pack tight and low, but flip open to unveil a tent and camp kitchen.

Pop tops – usually not as low down as a camper but still lighter to tow than a caravan. They often pop both up and out, with beds at one or both ends, a kitchen, dinette and storage.

Caravans – size makes a difference, they can also pop out at the ends or slide from the side to provide more space when you set up.

Motor homes – these come in all shapes and sizes from massive converted buses to a kombi or four-wheel drive with a bed in the roof or the back.

How do you make the decision?

This is really a matter for personal preference but one of the best things to do is try before you buy.

Things to consider include:

Set up time – how long are you prepared to spend setting up your site after a long days drive? (the more hassle the less likely you are to use your camper or van)

Towing capacity – check the weight that your car can safely and legally tow.
