What you can do to protect your banking

Stay on top of your online security and keeping your banking safe.

Keep passwords, PINs and security codes secret

  • Make PINs and passwords hard to guess – don’t use your name, date of birth, pet’s name, or address.
  • The longer your password is, the stronger it will be.
  • Use different passwords for all your online accounts.
  • Change them regularly.
  • Don’t write them down.
  • Never disclose them to anyone (even ANZ or the police).
  • Take care not to let anyone see your PIN or password (e.g. by shielding your PIN at ATMs).

Check your accounts regularly

Look for transactions you don’t recognise. You can easily view your transaction history and past statements in ANZ Internet Banking and the ANZ Pacific App.

Protect your cards

  • Keep your physical card safe.
  • Don’t share or give your card to someone else.
  • Don’t use your card at ATMs that look unusual or like they have been tampered with.
  • Report your suspicions to the bank that owns the ATM.
  • Protect your card’s PIN – don’t share it with anyone including friends or family or, let anyone see it.
  • Only use your card at places you trust, whether online or in person.
  • Never share your card details over the phone or in email.
  • Don’t give your card to family or friends, even if there are no funds in your account. Your card works like a key to your bank account, and your information.

Be very wary of unexpected calls

Don’t give anyone remote access to your phone or computer. Be careful about sharing personal information. If you’re unsure, just hang up and call the organisation back on their listed phone number to check. Make sure you report scam calls to your phone company and bank.

Be careful about clicking on links or attachments in emails and text messages

Hover your cursor over the link to see which website it leads to and if you have doubts, don’t click. On a mobile device you can press and hold a link to check the website address before you click.

Delete emails from people or organisations you don’t know and never click on a link to ANZ Internet Banking in an email. Always type anz.com/vanuatu into your web browser. Never enter your password into third-party websites or web pages you’ve accessed by clicking on a link.

Even emails that look legitimate can be scams, so stay up to date on the latest scams.

Only shop on secure websites you know and trust

  • Shop with reputable, trusted companies – beware of online sites you’ve never heard of.
  • Never save credit card details or passwords at online shops or set your browser to remember or auto-complete password or other details.
  • Only buy at sites that have SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption –URLs start with <https://>, not <http://>, and you’ll see a locked padlock icon.
  • Never share Visa Secure Verification Codes with anyone.

Keep your devices secure

  • Keep them locked when you’re not using them.
  • Never leave them unattended when you’re logged into ANZ Internet Banking or the ANZ Pacific App – always log off when you’re finished.
  • Be careful if other people have access to your device – don’t enable fingerprint, face or other biometric identification access to your device or in your ANZ Pacific App settings if someone else’s fingerprint, face or other biometric identification is stored on your device.
  • Don’t enable mobile wallet cards on a shared device.
  • If you sell or give your device to someone else, remember to delete the ANZ Pacific App first.
  • Don’t enable mobile wallet cards on a shared device.
  • Keep anti-virus software and operating systems updated.
  • Never use public computers or Wi-Fi (e.g. at libraries or cafes) for your banking as they may not be secure.
  • Never click the ‘save my password/details’.
  • Only install apps from the App Store or Google Play.
